Wirecutter's 2026 Grab Bar Picks, Installed for DMV Homes
NYT Wirecutter's 2026 grab bar review is excellent advice for new construction. For DMV homes built between 1920 and 1990 — plaster, tile on drywall, or lath — the installation is the hard part. Here's what Wirecutter got right and what your walls mean for the install.
James Merrick bought the Wirecutter-recommended Moen grab bar on a Tuesday. By Thursday night, he had three holes in his Capitol Hill bathroom wall, a defeated stud finder on the floor, and his mother Carol — who was moving in the following week after a fall — watching him from the hallway with an expression that said she'd been expecting this.
"I hit something solid," he told the contractor he called the next morning. "But it wasn't a stud. It was... I don't know. Crumbly."
The contractor, a CAPS-certified guy who'd been working on DC rowhouses for twenty years, diagnosed it over the phone: plaster on wood lath. James's 1928 Capitol Hill rowhouse had walls that predated the stud finder by about fifty years. The bar he'd bought — the same one Wirecutter crowned its 2026 pick — was the right product. But the wall under it wasn't the wall Wirecutter assumed.
This is the problem that the New York Times Wirecutter's excellent 2026 grab bar review can't solve. Wirecutter tested four bars, interviewed an occupational therapist, and came to the right conclusion: throw out the suction-cup bars, mount into studs. Every one of their picks requires solid anchoring. For a house built in a new development in the last ten years, the advice is straightforward: find the stud, drill, done.
For a DMV home — and most of them in DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia were built between 1920 and 1990 — the wall is the wildcard.
What Your Wall Is Actually Made Of
Plaster on wood lath (pre-1950 homes). Think DC rowhouses in Capitol Hill, Cleveland Park, and Georgetown. Also older Alexandria and Arlington homes. The wall is plaster troweled over horizontal wood strips. There are studs behind the lath, but a standard stud finder is unreliable because the plaster thickness and metal lath mesh confuse the sensor. Drill carefully — plaster crumbles if you go too fast.
Plaster on metal lath (1920s–1950s). You'll find this in older apartment buildings and some mid-century homes. The metal mesh behind the plaster is excellent at rejecting stud finders. The mesh itself is not structural — do not anchor a grab bar to it.
Drywall over studs (1960s–present). Most suburban homes in Montgomery County, Fairfax County, and newer DC construction. A stud finder works here. If you find a stud at the right height and location, you can mount directly — use 3-inch #12 stainless steel screws, at least two into the stud, and the manufacturer's mounting flange. Tile on greenboard or drywall (1960s–present bathrooms). This is the tricky one. In newer bathrooms, tile is often set on greenboard (water-resistant drywall) over studs. The stud finder may work through the tile. If you find a stud, drill through the tile with a carbide-tipped bit, then into the stud. If there's no stud at the right location, you need blocking — see below.
Tile on mortar bed (older bathrooms, pre-1980s). Common in mid-century homes with original bathrooms. The tile is set in a thick mortar bed — an inch or more of cement-like material — over wood lath or metal mesh. Drilling through this is slow and dusty. A hammer drill with a carbide bit is non-negotiable. And you still need a stud or blocking behind the mortar — the mortar bed itself is not a structural anchor.

Here's what Wirecutter recommended, and what matters for DMV installation.
Best overall: Moen Home Care 16-Inch Grab Bar (model LR8724). Stainless steel, 1.25-inch diameter, supports 500 pounds when properly installed. The SecureMount system helps with stud alignment. At about $35, it's the bar most CAPS contractors install in the DMV. Wirecutter's pick aligns with what local pros actually use.
Best vertical entry bar: Moen Home Care 24-Inch Vertical Bar (model LR8724V). Same construction, vertical orientation. Installed at the shower entry so your parent has something to grab while stepping over the threshold. Wirecutter recommends a 24-inch bar minimum for vertical applications — a shorter bar limits the usable grip range.
Best angled bar: Drive Medical 16-Inch Angled Grab Bar. The 45-degree angle helps with transitions from sitting to standing at the toilet. Angled bars require more careful blocking placement because the mounting points are at a diagonal — the stud layout may not align with both flanges.
Best budget bar that still passes: Moen Home Care 12-Inch Bar. Compromises on length but not on build quality. A 12-inch bar is useful for tight spaces — beside a pedestal sink or in a small powder room. It is not long enough for a shower entry, where your parent needs 16 to 24 inches of continuous grip surface as they step over the threshold.
When DIY Mounting Into a Stud Works
If the stud finder confidently locates a stud at the exact height you need the bar, and the stud runs vertically where the mounting flanges land, and your wall is drywall or thin tile — you can install this yourself. Use the manufacturer's screws (they're stainless and rated for the load). Drill a pilot hole slightly smaller than the screw diameter. Tighten until the flange is flush with the wall but do not overtighten — you'll crack the tile or strip the stud.
Test it. Pull on the bar with your full body weight. If it moves at all — a creak, a flex, a millimeter of give — undo it and call a contractor. A grab bar that moves is worse than no grab bar because it teaches your parent to trust something that will fail.
When You Need Blocking, and What That Means
If there is no stud at the right location, you need blocking installed between the studs behind the wall. This typically means opening the wall from the accessible side — which is often the back side of the bathroom wall (a closet, a hallway, or the other side of the shower wall).
A CAPS contractor installs a 2x8 or 2x10 wood blocking between two studs, secured with structural screws or lag bolts. The blocking spans the gap, and the grab bar is then mounted through the wall finish into the blocking. The blocking is what carries the load — the grab bar screws go into solid wood, not just wallboard.
Blocking installation runs $200–$600 per bar location depending on wall access. If the wall needs to be opened, patched, and refinished — and it's tile or plaster — it can run higher. This is the cost families don't plan for. The bar itself is $35. Making the wall hold it can be 10x that.
The Plaster-on-Lath Situation
In older DC homes, a single grab bar installation can require:
1. Locating the stud (magnetic stud finder, not electronic — the metal lath kills electronic sensors)
2. Marking the bar position
3. Drilling test holes to confirm the stud is real (not a lath strip that feels like a stud)
4. If the stud is in the wrong place, opening the plaster from the adjacent room's side
5. Installing blocking between studs
6. Patching plaster — which requires a plasterer, not a drywall guy, if you want it to match

The One Thing Wirecutter Can't Tell You
Wirecutter's review is national. It's written for people with drywall over studs. It cannot tell you what's behind your bathroom wall.
A DMV bathroom built in 1938 has different walls than a bathroom built in 2008. The bar is the same. The install is not. Before you buy Wirecutter's pick, go into your bathroom and knock on the wall. If it sounds hollow, it's drywall — find a stud and mount. If it sounds solid and dense, it's plaster or mortar — plan for blocking.
And if you have a suction-cup grab bar anywhere in the house, take it down now. Wirecutter, the OT they interviewed, and every CAPS contractor in the DMV agrees: it will fail when someone actually grabs it.
